Where do dogs sleep?

I thought I would start anew with 2010 and open a discussion on how our dogs sleep.

They are so spoiled. With 4 dogs in the house it is hard to find room on the bed, even given it is a king size bed for all of them. We have the bed, two crates, a dog bed, a couch and a kuranda bed in the room for them.

They are picky!

Lacey always takes her spot by my feet and doesn’t give an inch to anyone else.

Addie likes the couch usually but I have noticed lately that she is becoming a bed dog. Right next to me, curled up tight. She is a very flexible dog and can make herself very small.

Sneakers starts out every night in the crate and ends up every night on the pillow. Yes, on the pillow. She is not so flexible, so she takes a lot of room and usually drives Addie off the bed.

Tumble is very flexible and will fill in any empty space on the bed. She likes the bed and I think she wants to take over Lacey’s spot. Good luck with that.

Boy are they hot! And they always steal the covers!

Same here. King size bed not big enough.
Jesse, since he has gotten older, likes to sleep in his own room, any room as long as it is his alone. Devon, sideways along body, either one of us. Daryl, sideways, takes up to much room. Joshua on the pillows, often on his back like a person.
Funny, sometimes one of them gets up and like musical chairs they all change spots. Still not enough room.

My first thought was . . . where ever they damn well please!

But, I guess — with 7 labs in the house and 6 in my bed, there really is some sort of order to the chaos.

    Charlie sleeps upstairs with Jaymie…

Everybody else in our room. We have a cape cod so our master bedroom is on the first floor, right off the kitchen.

Mercy always sleeps at the top of the bed between my and Tim’s pillows…everybody knows, don’t mess with that spot.

Then it becomes a weave in the following order:

    Emma
    Rose
    Mocha

they sleep so tight together that the end of the bed leaves LOTS of room for Camry and Sequel.

Now, Mercy, Emma & Rose usually don’t move, if they get up at night, they get right back in their spots.

We have 3 open kennels, Mocha usually ends up in one of them. Camry usually takes the dog bed on the floor next to me.

Sequel has claimed the Kuranda bed in the kitchen as her very own and usually goes out there (just like Mercy with her spot at the head of the bed, when Sequel goes for the Kuranda, everybody automatically moves) LOL!

Fiesta when she comes up- wraps around my head.
Salsa sleeps on the outside- and that puts me in the middle unable to move.
Kodi is ole’ faithful on the pet bed on the floor.

NOONE moves until I get up. They all ignore Mike in the mornings.

Young Diego still gets his crate until he can be trusted.

*sigh* — did i mention i only have a double sized bed…no king here! LOL.

  4. banth Says:

How on earth do you sleep with 6 dogs on the bed? 3 about take all my room and I am locked in tighter than a drum!

  5. Valerie Says:

King size bed here for the dogs & I - Tina I don’t know how you manage with a double!

Ripken usually sleeps cuddled next to my head or across my feet (it’s not easy to move with 94# of sleeping Labrador across your lower legs!).

Hope sleeps on the other side of Ripken amongst the pillows.

Aglet - curled up in her crate - I haven’t been brave enough to let her sleep out as she likes to grab things and chew them up. Maybe I’ll try tonight because she should be tired from swimming.

Zelda - the Field Spaniel - used to sleep on the pillows or on my head…until she peed on the bed in the middle of the night (2 different times) so she is back in her crate.

And most winter nights my cat Buddy Francois is also on the pillows, although last night he was snuggled up with Ripken. :)

I’ve got 4 dogs on the bed when Cora is not in heat. Finn on my right side, Darcy on my left, Cora on my right down near my feet and Deacon the same on the left side. Makes for a very crowded bed, but warm in the winter.

  7. banth Says:

This winter especially, dog warmth is great!

I can sleep in summer pj’s because of them!

  8. Cheryl Says:

Bonnie, My boy Grady has his own human mattress to sleep on - it’s a toddler bed that is all his own… and is right next to my bed. It’s complete with pillows, toddler sheet and blanket and he gets tucked in every night (in winter anyway) in summer he usually winds up on the tile bathroom floor (his choice). In winter he likes to cuddle up with me on the couch to watch TV too!

  9. Tina Says:

summer pj’s here too- thank doG for our Labs. no socks, no slippers…just lots of double coat!!! gonna sweep up the Spring shed and LOL…make me a blanket out of their fur!
Valerie…double is all i need. much more cozy like that. hehehe…Mike and I had a queen once upon a time, and replaced with double when there was all that extra room!

My 7 year old has a book called “Help Me Mr. Mutt.” It’s a Dear Abby book for dos written to Mr. Mutt, Canine Couunselor. Here’s the dog’s perspective on the bed situation.

    Dear Mr. Mutt,
I’m a biiiig dog. And I need a biiiig bed. A biiiig people bed. But my people say, “Get down!” They make me sleep on a little doggie bed. Most of me is on the cooold, haaard floor. I can’t sleep on the cooold, hard floor. I’m exhausted. Help me, Mr. Mutt!

P.S. Our snooty cat gets the fluffy, puffy, comfy bed.

    Dear Sleepless,

You are not alone. In a recent poll, nine out of ten dogs said they definitely prefer to sleep on the people bed. Here’s how you do it:

!. Choose the right bed. Grown-up bed? Too crowded. Baby bed? Too small. Kid bed? Just right.
    2. Choose the right time. Nose on bed. Asleep? Check. Crawl up. Asleep? Check.Wiggle forward. Plop! The kid’s on the floor. Bingo! The bed is yours. Good luck, Sleepless. And remember, you are TOP DOG!

P.S. Use the fluffy, puffy, comfy cat bed for a pillow. Better yet, use the flea-bitten cat for a pillow!

I found your site while searching yahoo for some dog bed information. I have heard a lot of good things about Snoozer beds but I guess I’m looking for the best! Any opinions?

  12. Susan Says:

Hubby doesn’t like dogs in the bed, so it is off limits. Conner sleeps on a pad near the foot of the bed on my side. Eli, my 7 year old, sleeps in his very own huge soft sided crate in the living room. The puppy, Gage, stills sleeps in his crate until he’s a little older. He’s pretty good for a 5 month old, but there’s just so much that can go wrong so quickly in the middle of the night!
